What is Web Vitals?
Web Vitals are a set of metrics designed to assess the actual user experience on a website. They help developers and SEO specialists understand how fast the main content loads, how quickly the site responds to user interaction, and how stable the content displays during load time. Previously, the FID (First Input Delay) metric was widely used, but modern research and Google updates have led to the introduction of INP (Interaction to Next Paint), which gives a more comprehensive view of a user's interaction with a site.
Search Engine Ranking: How Speed and Stability Affect Positions
Google Algorithms and Updates
Search engines, especially Google, are constantly improving their ranking algorithms with a focus on the quality of the user experience. Updates such as Page Experience Update take into account factors such as loading speed, responsiveness, and page layout stability. Here's why improving Web Vitals scores becomes critical:
-
Reducing Bounce Rate: Slow loading times and unstable layout can discourage users, resulting in a higher bounce rate. Search engines interpret high bounce rates as a sign of a low-quality site, which negatively affects positions.
-
Enhancing time on site: Fast loading and responsive sites create a positive user experience, which increases dwell time, reduces bounce rates and therefore has a positive impact on SEO.
-
Positive behavioural factors: User satisfaction directly affects signals such as clicks, returns to the site and social interaction. These factors are taken into account by search algorithms when determining the relevance and usefulness of a page.
Benefits of Good Performance
-
Improved search engine rankings: Websites with optimised Web Vitals get an advantage in ranking algorithms, which helps them climb higher in search results.
-
Enhance user trust: Fast and stable websites boost user trust, leading to increased conversions and repeat visits.
-
Competitive Advantage: In a highly competitive environment, even a small improvement in performance can significantly set a site apart from the competition.

Key Web Vitals metrics: LCP, INP and CLS
In this article, we look at three key metrics that determine website performance:
LCP - Measures the load time of the largest element on a page, reflecting the loading speed of the main content. Should be less than 2.5 seconds
INP - Estimates the latency of user interaction with the site, replacing FID for a more accurate measure of responsiveness. Less than 200ms
CLS - Measures page layout stability, preventing unexpected element shifts during loading. Less than 0.1
These metrics provide a comprehensive assessment of site performance and identify areas for improvement.
Performance Optimisation Recommendations
To improve SEO performance and user experience, we recommend paying attention to the following aspects:
-
Minimising resources: Compressing images, optimising scripts and styles to reduce load times.
-
Improving server infrastructure: Setting up caching, using modern server solutions and CDNs to speed up content delivery.
-
Adaptive design: Ensuring the site displays correctly on all devices, especially mobile devices.
-
Regular auditing and monitoring: Continuous monitoring of Web Vitals metrics using specialised tools will help identify and respond to issues in a timely manner.
Conclusion
Website performance plays a key role in the success of any project. Web Vitals provide clear and measurable data to optimise a website in terms of user experience and search ranking. Improving metrics such as LCP, INP and CLS not only improves search engine rankings, but also increases user trust, which ultimately leads to increased conversions.
